ERWIN MATTHEWS
NSW, Australia

featuring
THE REAL AUSTRALIA :
Painting in light and thread

digital embroideries

I have satisfied my yearnings to be a
water-colourist by using thread to interpret many of my photographs taken in localities both lived in and visited around Australia...”
I have admired Erwin’s work for a long time.  His embroidered pictures have amazing detail and he captures the innate beauty of the Australian landscape with all types of terrain and weather.
He has a particular passion for derelict buildings and that Aussie icon ‘the corrugated roof’.

A favourite of us both is “New Beginnings” (from my photo) which captures the re-growth after the bush fire in the Grampians – a miracle of nature indeed.  This was the first embroidery for my then new Gallery in Noosa. (shown below)
Another outstanding picture (from his own photograph) is the “Grass Tree - Flinders Ranges” which captures the scene perfectly. (see right)
I also love the little old house in Tiaro, Queensland, (from my photo)  now the home of the local real estate office!
(see bottom right)

Visit Erwin’s Gallery Page where you will find many more of his beautiful, individual and exclusive works of art.

He is both my friend and mentor and I am delighted and proud that he uses my photographs as inspiration for his pictures which are displayed in my Gallery in Noosa.

Starting with a digital photograph or scanned image as inspiration Erwin uses a variety of embroidery techniques to create his pictures.
Then using a subtle pallet of threads he stitches his design onto silk, calico or felt or other base fabric depending on the effect he requires.

Each picture will have upwards of 200,000 stitches, and some take up to 4 hours to stitch out.
They are each unique.

Erwin Matthews is an advocate of the Australian College of Computer Embroidery and Textile Technologies.

His innovative work and technical skills as a mature student were recognised and then harnessed by the co-founders of the College, Myra and Bryan Doyle, who subsequently encouraged him to work with them on many college projects.
